Calling all verse novelists! Those who are writing one, those who have an idea that wants to be one, those who are stuck in the middle of one, or at the beginning.

Presented by Lisa Jacobson in association with Writers Victoria

Writing a verse novel is like riding a horse: the story wants to gallop home but the poetry must be reined in. It can be a rewarding ride, but one that requires tenacity and trust in the creature itself.

This course covers the essentials in an exploratory and evolving manner. There will be a Q&A, examples of the form and workshopping. Participants will have a work-in-progress or strong concept ready to go. The course will cover:

  • Handling plot, time and narrative in verse
  • Keeping the verse in the verse novel
  • Sustaining a book-length poem
  • Essential devices of the form
  • More about contemporary verse novels and what’s out there
